Planning begins and ends with the needs of the people: food, air, water, shelter, space, health, education, mobility, work and play – all the factors of life. Provision of these needs is as intricate, as complicated, as unchanging and as continuous as life itself. The Mercer County Conservation District plans to take the lead in the challenge of meeting the needs of the land and of the people on the land, thereby improving the quality of life for all.
Programs:
- The district will be accepting requests for cost-share funding under the Kentucky Soil and Water Quality Cost Share Program (call to ask for dates of application). This program was created to assist agricultural operations in protecting the soil and water resources of Kentucky. This program allows funds to be administered through conservation districts with priority given to animal waste related problems. This program contains best management practices that include: (1) rotational grazing systems, (2) alternative watering systems, (3) heavy use feeding areas including concrete, (4) sinkhole protection, (5) grassed waterways, and vegetative critical areas, just to name a few examples. Funding for practices will be approved by the Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Commission as practices up to the maximum amount ($20,000.00) allowed per applicant per year.
- County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP) The CAIP program is supported by the KY Agricultural Development Fund, producers select from eleven investment areas to improve their farming operation. They are: (1) Agricultural Diversification, (2) Agri Tech & Leadership Development, (3) Large Animal, (4) Small Animal, (5) Farm Infrastructure, (6) Fencing & On-Farm Water, (7) Forage & Grain Improvement, (8) Innovative Agricultural Systems, (9) On-Farm Energy, (10) Poultry & Other Fowl, (11) Value-Added & Marketing. This program is at a 50% cost-share rate. Mercer County landowners can receive up to ($4,000.00). Sign-up period varies from last of July, to first of August for 3 weeks.
